A new challenge

Hi, guys!

I'd like to propose a challenge. Complete each of the empty spaces with one (different) word. Then, explain the meaning of the six expressions.

1. I really did not study that much for the test. I just have a __________ for the right answers.

2. He was really afraid of being caught, so he did a _________.

3. He used inside information to __________his own nest.

4. If you do not agree with my decisions, you can quit. Remember, I am calling the __________ now.

5. My parents worked their entire lives to build up a good-sized __________ egg. Now that they are retired, they can finally do all the things they could never afford before.

6. The President appeared at a rally in Washington to make a __________for his new economic plan.

Bye. Happy Easter!

Bia

Isn't anyone going to give it a go???

I guess Bia could give us a few hints, like I did the last time... this challenge's pretty hard!

Well, let me try to help you...

you need only one word to complete each sentence, and the first letter of each one is:

1. n
2. r
3. f
4. s
5. n
6. p

does it help?

Cheers,

Bia

Well... let me say what I think of 3,4,5 and 6, 'cause I can't see what 1 and 2 could possibly be. Where's everybody to help??

3. He used inside information to FAVOR his own nest. / That is, he made use of this information to his own benefit.

4. If you do not agree with my decisions, you can quit. Remember, I am calling the SHOTS now. / When you're calling the shots, you're in charge of something and you may tell people what to do.

5. My parents worked their entire lives to build up a good-sized NEST egg. Now that they are retired, they can finally do all the things they could never afford before. / A nest nest is a sum of money put aside as a reserve.

6. The President appeared at a rally in Washington to make a PLEA for his new economic plan. / To make a plea can be to make an appeal, or to make an excuse, or even to ask for support. The specific meaning would depend on the context in this case.

Now 1 and 2.... tough! With 1, I'd say,

1. I really did not study that much for the test. I just have a KNACK for the right answers. / That would fit the context, but the correct answer starts with 'n', so I don't know what it could be.

And 2, "He was really afraid of being caught, so he did a _________.", for me is the most difficult one! I thought of "a runthough", which can mean to make a review, check things again, practice... but I'm pretty sure that's not the correct answer.

Well that's that, did I get any of them right?

What say you, Bia?

Well, Thiago,

I'm sorry for proposing such a hard challenge.

The others could help... Where are you guys?

Anyway, you got the right answers for numbers 4 and 5. Congrats!

You got the idea of numbers 1 and 2, so you're close to an answer.

Let me try to help you a bit more:

1. n... = a part of the body

2. Carl Lewis was a famous American r.....

3. f.... = something that covers the body of some animals;

6. As I'm having trouble sleeping in this noisy neighborhood, I'll need to use an ear p....

Well, I hope it really helps this time....

Bye,

Bia

Well Bia, it wouldn't be a challenge if it weren't difficult, right??

Well.... let's see now:

2. to do a runner (to escape without getting caught)
3. to feather one's nest(to become wealthy by taking advantage his position)
4. to call the shots - OK
5. a nest egg - OK
6. to plug (to make a point)

As for number 1, could it possibly be "to have a neck for" (an instinct for)?

Thiago Sardenberg said...

Or, better yet, number 6 could be "to have a NOSE" for, that is, an ability at finding something - it could be the answers, in that case.

Levi Ramos said...

So what do you say now, Bia?

Ana Beatriz said...

That's it, Thiago! Congrats!

just to confirm:

1. to have a nose for
2. to do a runner
3. to feather one's nest
4. to call the shots
5. a nest egg
6. to make a plug

Cheers,

Bia
