A new challenge

Hi guys!
As a student who's just enrolled in the class, I thought it would be a nice idea to go beyond the "hello everybody" and propose a little challenge!
Well, inspired by our class today, in which we dealt with prepositional phrases, the challenge I propose is to complete the sentences with complex prepositions or prepositional verbs.

Here we go!

1) Capital Punishment [ ] inhuman and immoral.
2) As she drove away, I just [ ] and wept.
3) This is a concert [ ] victims of the war.
4) I've successfully completed the test [ ] my teacher.
5) He [ ] an interesting book at Borders.

See you all next friday!
Thiago

This looks like a lot of fun. So it's all student-led?

Hi,

I believe the answer to #3 is: in aid of

I really don't know the answer to the others... Sorry.

What say you, Thiago?

You got it right, Ana, number 3 is "in aid of", a prepositional verb!

BTW, that Student Handouts website is quite useful! You can really find interesting material in there...

I think I should follow Levi's advice and give you guys a few hints - one of the elements that completes each of the answers.

In number 1, "as";
2, "down";
4, "to" and
5, "across".

Hope that helps!

Let me give it another try...
1)well, the only thing I could think about was: is regarded as / is seen as;
2)sat down;
3)as I said before (and the only one I'm sure about): in aid of;
4)thanks to;
5)came across.

I don't believe the answers are correct, but that's all I could do.
Is anything correct?

What about now, Thiago?
What say you?

Ana, you came very close to getting all the answers just as I had them!

Here we go,
1) Capital Punishment is regarded as inhuman and immoral.
2) As she drove away, I just broke down and wept.
3) This is a concert in aid of victims of the war.
4) I've successfully completed the test thanks to my teacher.
5) He came across an interesting book at Borders.

As you can see, only number 2 differs from your answers. Still, I believe your answer would perfectly fit that context.

By the way, these examples were mainly taken from the Oxford American Dictionary/Advanced Learner's Dictionary and the Cambridge International Dictionary of English.
